At Fresh Ink, we’re in love with design. The way that you visually brand yourself can sometimes communicate your brand identity better than words can. It’s with this in mind that we say: Don’t be afraid of white space!
When many companies design their logos and brand image, they are inclined to make them as busy as possible, throwing in as many pictures and pieces of text that they possibly can. However, we’re believers in the old saying that less is more. Using white space and simple graphics makes content easier to read and easier to focus on. It puts the viewers attention on what you’re saying instead of how you’re saying it and directs them towards what they should be looking at next. Throwing too much at a viewer all at once can be distracting and could actually cause that person to disengage from your content.
Using white space is also an ideal tactic in web design. The use of white space on a webpage makes it easier for your customers to find what they need, which can boost brand loyalty and your sales. As an example, consider Google (link) and Yahoo (link). Google’s simple design and ease of use makes people prefer it to the cluttered, haphazard format that Yahoo has stuck with. Google creates a better user experience with its user-friendly layout and has benefitted tremendously from it. Take a look at your own designs and ask yourself the question, “Am I a Google or a Yahoo?”
So don’t be afraid to let your designs breathe a little! Use white space and simplicity to your advantage and watch your user-friendliness grow.
